Established on February 6, 1953 as soon as Dongguk was raised to the status of university, the Graduate School has produced 5,400 masters, 1,600 doctors, and 90 honorary doctors so far. All of them have advanced into every field of the society like politics, economy, law, industries etc., and are making contributions to the realization of the democratic society and globalization of Korea as competent leaders and human resources.
Following the trend that graduate school education is being developed in and out of the country, the Graduate School tries to make itself specialized and fruitful through having more faculty, facilities, and equipment.
At present, it boasts of its systematic organization consisting of 500 faculty, 59 departments for master's degree (entrance quota of 640 people), and 52 departments for doctor's degree (entrance quota of 206 people). It is well known that the academic level of the Graduate School is at the center of the academic world, especially, in the fields of Buddhist studies and oriental studies.
The monumental achievements that Dongguk has made in the field of literature, is the mental prop and stay of the nation and has played a leading role in making Korea rooted in the world. In addition, it is assessed as the great accomplishment of realizing ideals of the nation and mankind that the Graduate School has had competent faculty with high scholarly achievements and moral influence, and succeeded to the perpetual academic traditions.
Keeping pace with globalization of learning, it has set up sisterhood relationships with 6 universities in the USA including UCLA, 2 universities in Germany including Regensburg university, University of Exeter in England, Paris 3rd university in France, 8 universities in Japan including Komazawa university, 2 Universities in Russia including Moscow Commercial University, 9 universities in China including Peking university, Central Queensland University in Australia, Lincoln university in New Zealand, Nehru university in India, Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, and a university in Thailand.
Through the sisterhood relationships, the Graduate School is carrying out academic and cultural interchange, and dispatching excellent students to those schools.
